Walking in and around Kesselt

Walking in and around Kesselt

The slow roads in and around Kesselt are unknown territory for most. That’s why the municipality of Lanaken, in collaboration with Regional Landscape Kempen and Maasland, Heritage Circle Wiosello and Natuurpunt, has developed no less than 3 walking routes. These loops introduce walkers to the small village center of Kesselt and the rolling Haspengouw landscape. Thanks to the mix of culture and nature, this walk offers great experiential value.

Starting point

The three walks each start at the community center De Helle (A. Nelissenlaan 12, 3620 Lanaken). At the start you will find a large walking board displaying the three landscape walks (3.7 km, 5.5 km and 6.8 km).

Signage

All three loops are signposted. They are easily recognizable by the wooden poles with a red triangle, blue diamond or green rectangle.

Highlights along the way

The highlight on the red and blue route is the Kesseltse Kip, an artificial hill located between the villages of Kesselt and Veldwezelt. It was created during the construction of the Albert Canal in the 1930s. The excavated soil was ‘dumped’ on the western bank. It is now a small-scale landscape where many animals and plants feel at home. On the orientation hill, one of the 14 Landmarks in the region, walkers are treated to a panoramic view.
